DC-SPVC operates in conjunction with DC-Call Control to set up Soft PVCs across an ATM network. A Soft PVC is a user-to-user connection in which the user-to-network connections are PVCs, but all or part of the cross-network connection is an SVC and does not need to be configured at every hop across the network (as would be the case for a PVC).

This includes a discussion of our proprietary solution for protection-switched SPVCs.
Functions and Features
DC-SPVC supports the full Soft PVC MIB Addendum to the PNNI MIB. It includes the following functions.
- Allowing configuration and management of Soft PVCs through MIB tables
- Establishing and maintaining Soft PVCs using SVCs and the facilities of a signalling stack
- Bringing down Soft PVCs by releasing the underlying SVCs when requested to do so through the MIB
- Recovering failed Soft PVCs by establishing new SVCs without intervention from the applications or from management
- Providing a Fault Tolerance infrastructure by supporting replication of data between primary and secondary copies of DC-SPVC
DC-SPVC supports full createAndGo and createAndWait access to the Soft PVC MIBs. The MIB tables for Soft PVCs are defined in the ATM Forum PNNI Specification Addendum (Soft PVC MIB). DC-SPVC supports the following MIB tables and variables from the Soft PVC MIB.
- Soft PVC and PVP tables (atmSoftPVccTable and atmSoftPVpcTable)
- Soft PVC Address table (atmInterfaceSoftPvcAddressTable)
- Soft PVC Call Failures Trap enable (atmSoftPvcCallFailuresTrapEenable)
- Soft PVC Call Failures (count) (atmSoftPvcCallFailures)
- Currently Failing Soft PVC and PVP (counts) (atmSoftPvcCurrentlyFailingSoftPVccs and atmSoftPvcCurrentlyFailingSoftPVpcs)
- Soft PVC Trap Notification interval (atmSoftPvcTrapNotificationInterval)
- Currently Failing Soft PVC and PVP (durations) (atmCurrentlyFailingSoftPVccTable and atmCurrentlyFailingSoftPVpcTable)
DC-SPVC also supports the single trap type defined by the Soft PVC MIB. If requested through the MIB, DC-SPVC generates the following trap when a PVC fails and sends it to the MIB Manager.
- Soft PVC Call Failures trap (atmSoftPvcCallFailuresTrap)
DC-SPVC can optionally support proprietary MIB tables for the explicit configuration of the route taken by the SVC part.
Protection-Switched SPVCs
DC-SPVC can optionally support a proprietary solution for providing a back-up SVC part of a Soft PVC, which takes over in the event of the primary SVC part failing.

The benefits of this approach are discussed in our White Paper: Soft PVCs in an ATM Network (PDF format, 109 KB).
