After leaving university with an Engineering degree, I joined a large multi-national company which designs and manufactures a wide selection of telecoms products. During 8 years service, I had a variety of roles within a product development group, including becoming the lead architect for the product.

I had sometimes found large company internal politics and the inability to make key decisions frustrating, so I wanted to experience working for a smaller company. I was also looking for a company which could remain stable through an industry downturn and somewhere I could expand my telecoms knowledge. Data Connection fitted the bill, so I applied.

I had been warned that the Data Connection culture would be very different and it was. At my old company I was left to get on with things without much supervision; now I have to keep my manager well informed on the progress of my current tasks. I will confess that it took me a few months to get used to the Data Connection way of doing things, however it works very well: in particular, projects are delivered on time without sacrificing quality.

Currently I am a member of the team that defines what the MetaSwitch product should do, both in terms of features for the next release and creating a long term strategy for the product. I enjoy the variety of things I get to work on and, although I've not been with the company for very long, I feel that I am able to make a valuable contribution. I am also very impressed with the quality of the talent at Data Connection - this makes my job much easier as colleagues are willing to help, are quick to grasp new ideas and provide meaningful feedback.

At Data Connection there is a strong sense of a company being run in the interest of all its employees. This manifests itself in a number of ways including an emphasis on personal development, long term company stability, generous benefits, morale/team building events, and returning all profit to its employees. There is also a flexible attitude to working patterns, where all reasonable requests will be considered. This allows me to maintain a good work/life balance - something I value highly with a young family.
