My story is a little different. I joined our MetaSwitch Division just over a year ago, having worked as a Consultant for a Big 4 accountancy firm. I moved because I wanted more challenging work, and that's certainly what I got.

After joining MetaSwitch and working for just under a year, I moved to California to one of our remote offices, where I'm a hybrid of a support engineer, a pre-sales engineer and a consultant. I support the partners we work with to create the end to end networks for our customers on just about everything, so it’s always interesting. It made sense to move to the US because most of our partners are based there. It’s a big deal to commit to a company enough to move to another country – your dependence on the firm and the people grows. However, I was never too concerned and to explain why, I've come up with my top five motivators for working at MetaSwitch. Hopefully, you will see why I like it:

Number One - Money
Ok so I’m motivated by money. Sure there are other factors which I'd need in order to enjoy my job, and yes they are all there too. But I sure wouldn't do it without the cash. The money is good – enough said.

Number Two – People
Every single person here is a great person to work with, not only do we all work well together but we have an active social life as well. In the past week I've been surfing with a group from the office, rock climbing with my mentor, enjoyed a few drinks at my manager's BBQ, and been to a festival with our IT support guy. That’s a great bunch of people to be working with.

Number Three – The Challenge
I wanted to work in a place where I would start off thinking 'I seriously have no idea how to do this' and finish thinking 'I'm really proud of myself for doing that'. And I got it. I've learnt a huge amount through real world, practical experience working with some of the most intelligent people in the business.

Number Four – The opportunities
Moving to California has been truly awesome. And MetaSwitch had enough trust in me to send me out soon after joining. The opportunities in this role have kept coming, so I’ve never felt like I’m working in a dead-end - it's quite the opposite, with ever-expanding horizons.

Number Five – The responsibility and autonomy
You're chosen for your job because you can do it, and then given the autonomy to go and do that job in your own inimitable style with nobody looking over your shoulder. However, there's always help if you need it. My manager gets the balance just right and is there to help me when I need it, but backs off when he knows I'll get there on my own.
