What attracted me to DC initially was the idea of gaining some experience of software engineering work. I had been vaguely interested in this kind of work for a while, but whether I would enjoy it, and indeed what it might actually involve, remained something of a mystery to me.

I arrived in July half expecting to be assigned at first some dull and rather robotic task. However, such fears proved to be completely unfounded! After a morning full of introductions to numerous people both on my team and others, I began 'ramp-up' on the SBC product, which I would be working on testing. Ramp-up, an oddly common phrase at DC, turned out to be learning lots of new words and concepts, and trying to fathom some of the various components and functions of the product. This was made considerably easier by the presence of my mentor on hand to answer the inevitable mountain of questions.

I quickly found that because the product code in an international company like DC is so extensive, no-one can be expected to know absolutely everything about it. As a result people often seek advice from colleagues who have greater experience in a given area, which made for a good environment for someone like me who came in knowing nothing at all!

When I had got something of a grasp on what I was dealing with, I was straightaway moved onto doing something worthwhile, and given a set of tests to conduct on the product. In the eight weeks I've been here, I have now designed, written and run various tests for different bits of product function.

What has really impressed me most about my time here, however, is the positive working environment. Flexible hours mean that I can start and finish a bit later in order to get a lie-in, and various organised sports happen at lunchtimes including football, badminton and ultimate frisbee. Jumping about over a long lunch can provide a much-needed break in the middle of the day, and is great fun! There are frequent tabs in local pubs when people start/leave/get married, as well as some company-funded morale trips which provide lots of opportunities to get to know people outside of a work setting.

Living in the company house has also been a major benefit, as it means I haven't had to spend the hours commuting every day that some friends elsewhere have when I can just walk into work. Additionally, it means that there are always other vacation students around to go to the pub, watch TV or do anything else you want to do!
