This year, I wanted to make use of the summer holidays trying to get a better idea of what my career options were, instead of just wasting it loafing around at home (like I did last year!).

I kept an open mind and hunted around at careers fairs and on the web, looking at computing, engineering and financial jobs. I went to a couple of presentations and it became obvious that I wanted a technical job, and Data Connection really stood out, promising to give me interesting and challenging tasks, and offering subsidised accommodation with the job.

I also applied to a large engineering firm, but their application process was so inefficient that I already had an offer from DC by the time they arranged my interview!

When I arrived at the company house, I was impressed by the number of students I would be living with. Almost immediately we were off down the pub! The company regularly organises trips and pub tabs too, so there is always something fun to do in the evenings.

In the office, I've been designing and coding fairly major changes to a new tool which will allow MetaSwitch documentation to be put online. It's been an interesting project, and really satisfying to actually have a direct impact on Data Connection's product. I've had to learn new things rapidly, but has been lots of support from people in my team, and I've enjoyed the challenge. The work has been mostly technical, but I have also been given the opportunity to give a presentation and write documentation for others in the team.

In all, I've really enjoyed working at DC. The work is interesting, the hours are reasonable and there's lots going on after work!
