Data Connection Announces DC-BGP, part of its Carrier-Class IP Routing Suite
DC-BGP is developed with the robustness and scalability required for core IP applications, and has the extensions incorporated for newer applications such as BGP/MPLS VPNs.
London, UK: May 14, 2002. Data Connection Limited (DCL), the leading provider of carrier-class communications protocol source code, today announced the addition of the Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) protocol to its suite of IP Routing products. DC-BGP has been architected specifically for the reliability, scalability and extensibility requirements both of today's fast growing Internet and of Next Generation Networks.
"We have nearly 20 years of experience in developing portable, scalable routing protocols. We have used this expertise and invested heavily to produce a fully featured, carrier-class suite of IP Routing protocols," said Phil McConnell, CEO of DCL. "This investment, combined with our corporate stability and willingness to work with customers over the long term, means that we are uniquely placed to work with OEMs to help them meet the most demanding requirements."
DC-BGP is a fully portable, source code solution that can be easily integrated with DC-MPLS and DCL's other IP Routing protocols (such as DC-OSPF), or can equally be used on its own, or with other third-party protocols. A highly scalable Routing Table Manager component is included that provides a flexible policy engine for controlling the sharing of routing information between different protocols (typically between an IGP and EGP).
DCL's IP Routing suite supports Virtual Routing in which there are different routing tables for different users. DC-BGP develops this further with a VPN Manager component for providing RFC 2547 BGP/MPLS VPNs. The VPN Manager extends the routing policy rules, for example allowing intelligent and efficient solutions for maintaining private per-VPN routing information alongside shared internet routes.
"IP Routing standards are developing very fast, in an attempt to solve a multitude of different requirements," said Ben Miller, DCL's General Manager of IP Routing solutions. "VPNs, optical network support, massive scalability, resilience and many other features are becoming important, and DC-BGP has had these requirements designed in from the outset."
DCL has gone through an extensive requirements process by consulting with major customers and end users. This ensures that DC-BGP and DCL's other IP Routing solutions are tailored to the needs of the market, with such features as
- ability to handle millions of routes with no hard-coded internal limits
- routing tables distributable to multiple locations, enabling distributed processing and ensuring that there is no single point of failure
- support for multiple instances of DC-BGP to implement Virtual Routers and BGP/MPLS VPNs.

DC-BGP runs within DCL's existing high performance portable execution environment--the N-BASE. This provides extensive scalability and flexibility and enables the distribution of protocol components across different hardware configurations. The N-BASE has been ported to a large number of operating systems including VxWorks, OSE, pSOS, Chorus, Nucleus, Solaris, HP-UX and Windows NT, and has been used on all common processors including x86, i960, Motorola 860 and 8260, Sparc, IDT and MIPS. Proprietary OSs and chipsets can be supported with minimal effort. In addition, pre-ported solutions are available on a range of operating systems including VxWorks, OSE, Linux, Solaris and Windows.
