3 Controlling 5250 Emulation

The SNAP-IX 5250 emulation program supports an unlimited number of display sessions and printer sessions (if sufficient resources are available to SNAP-IX). You can control these sessions in the following ways:

This section introduces the session control window and the session window and describes how to control 5250 display and printer sessions. More detailed help is available from the 5250 online help.

3.1 Session Control Window

The session control window is the first window that you will see when you start the 5250 emulation program. It enables you to control all the sessions from one window. You can use it to do the following:

The session control window contains a list of sessions. Any session that has its initial_session_state parameter set to DISCONNECTED or CONNECTED in the style file will initially be listed as enabled in the session control window and a session window will also appear for it.

The general layout and appearance of the session control window is shown in Session Control Window. The number and details of the sessions shown in the session control window will depend on the configuration that you are using. (For more information, see Configuring SNAP-IX.)

3.1.1 Viewing the Session List

Use the session control window to view 5250 sessions. You can view one of three different categories of sessions:

  • All sessions that have been configured for you (see Configuring SNAP-IX)

  • All enabled sessions (that are not in Disabled state)

  • All disabled sessions

Each entry in the list contains the following items:

  • An icon illustrating whether the session is a display session or a printer session

  • The session name that was configured for the session and is also used to reference the session in the style file (see Configuring SNAP-IXSNAP-IX)

  • The state of the session (described in Session States)

  • The description configured for the session (see Configuring SNAP-IXSNAP-IX)

  • The device ID for the session (if the session is a printer session), which you may be required to supply to the AS/400 when you print

One session in the list is highlighted at any one time. This is the current session. This session can be controlled from the session control window using the buttons on the toolbar or the Session menu. This is described in Controlling Sessions from the Session Control Window.

3.1.2 Session States

The session control window lists the state of each of the sessions. These states are:

Disabled

The emulation program has disconnected and disabled the session (if it was connected) or the session has never been enabled. A disabled session is not connected to the AS/400 (and if it is a display session it has no session window). You must enable a disabled session before you can start using it This will send it into Pending Connect state.

Disconnected

The emulation program has disconnected the session from the AS/400. A disconnected session can be disabled, which shuts down the session window (if it is a display session) and makes its state Disabled. If you want to use a disconnected session you can connect it again (which will make its state Pending Connect).

Pending Disconnect

The emulation program is trying to disconnect the session from the AS/400.

Pending Connect

The emulation program is trying to connect the session to the AS/400.

Failed

The emulation program tried to connect the session to the AS/400, but did not succeed. If you want to use the session, you can try to connect it again, which sends it to Pending Connect state. If you do not want to use a session that is in Failed state, you can disable it (which sends it to Disabled state).

Only display sessions can be in the following state:

Connected

The emulation program has connected the display session successfully to the AS/400. The session is ready to use.

Only printer sessions can be in the following states:

Idle

The emulation program has connected the printer session successfully to the AS/400. The session has a session window and is ready for you to use.

Printing

The emulation program is currently receiving a print job from the AS/400 on this printer session.

Paused

You have paused the printer session.

Printer Error

An error has occurred on the printer session.
