This chapter introduces the function provided by the SNAP-IX NDMA (NetView DM Agent). It includes the following sections:
Overview of NDMA
NetView DM functions supported by NDMA
NDMA in a Client-Server system
The NetView DM Agent, NDMA, is an agent running on the Solaris computer that uses the SNAP-IX product to communicate with the host. NDMA operates in conjunction with the NetView DM (NetView Distribution Manager) program at the host. This enables a NetView DM operator at the host to use NetView DM commands to manage files on the Solaris computer.
The NetView DM Operator can issue commands to NDMA from a 3270 terminal, either directly, or by submitting batch jobs to the host. NDMA is started and stopped from the Solaris computer on which it is running, and then runs without requiring operator intervention, processing commands received from the host NetView DM. A possible arrangement is illustrated in the diagram below.

NDMA can also operate with the earlier host program DSX (Distributed System Executive), which was superseded by NetView DM.
The operator can issue NetView DM commands that do the following:
Send files from the host to the Solaris computer, and retrieve files from the Solaris computer to the host
Delete files on the Solaris computer
Send a list of commands to the Solaris computer, which is then executed as the Solaris shell script
Send messages to be displayed to an operator at the Solaris computer
The host system does not need to be aware of the type of system it is communicating with; NDMA provides all the necessary mapping functions for the information provided by the host, such as mapping from NetView DM's file name format to Solaris path names.
NDMA operates in conjunction with the SNAP-IX product, and communicates with the host using a SNAP-IX node and communications link. For more information about SNAP-IX connectivity, refer to the SNAP-IX Administration Guide.
