4.3 Starting the Console Program

To start the console program, use the following command:

snarjecon wkst

You must start the console program on the computer for which the RJE workstation is configured, and the SNAP-IX software must be started on that computer. Consult your System Administrator if necessary, or refer to the SNAP-IX Administration Guide for information about RJE workstation configuration or about starting the SNAP-IX software.

The parameter wkst is the name of the RJE workstation for which you want to view console information.

4.3.1 Console Screen Display

SNAP-IX displays the console screen as shown in Sample Console Screen Display.

Sample Console Screen Display

The bottom line of the screen is the status line; it includes reminders of the keystrokes for online help, displays the workstation name and its current status, and indicates whether command editing is in INSERT or REPLACE mode and whether the console display is in BROWSE or FOLLOW mode. The meaning of each of the status line messages is explained in later sections of this chapter.

The line above the status line, which appears in reverse video, is the command input area where you can type host commands.

The remainder of the screen displays the console messages sent by the host and the text of any commands you have entered. Messages and commands are displayed in the order in which the console program receives them. On a color screen, messages from the host are displayed in green, and commands you enter are displayed in white.

4.3.2 Status Line Information

This section explains the indicators that appear on the status line of the console program.

Help Keystroke Reminder

F1 HELP

The F1 key displays help information, which reminds you how to use the console program.

INSERT or REPLACE Mode Indicator

The second indicator on the status line is one of the following:

INSERT

Command editing is in Insert mode; any text you type into the command input area is inserted at the current cursor position.

REPLACE

Command editing is in Replace mode; any text you type into the command input area overwrites the character at the current cursor position.

To switch between Insert and Replace mode, press Insert (or Ctrl + U). See Using the Program, for more information.

Workstation Status

The name of the RJE workstation for which console information is being displayed is shown on the status line. The status of the workstation is indicated by one of the following:

[WKST]

Brackets around the workstation name indicate that the workstation is inactive.

WKST-

A minus sign (-) following the workstation name indicates that the workstation is active, but the connection to the host is not established. This may be because the local node or link has not been started, because a link error has occurred, or because the host has rejected a logon attempt from the workstation. Consult your System Administrator if necessary.

WKST+

A plus sign (+) following the workstation name indicates that the workstation is active and that the connection to the host has been established. Host commands can be entered.

BROWSE or FOLLOW Mode Indicator

The last indicator on the status line is one of the following:

FOLLOW

The console program is in Follow mode; you are viewing new console messages as they are received.

BROWSE

The console program is in Browse mode; you are viewing earlier console messages.

See Viewing Console Information, for more information.
