You can work with default settings for terminal appearance and session details, or you can change them to suit your situation. To customize these parameters before beginning emulation or file transfer, see Customizing 3270 Emulation.
To accept the system defaults and begin display or printer emulation, continue with Fast Path to 3270 Terminal Emulation, or with the expanded instructions later in this chapter. To begin file transfer without changing your appearance and performance parameters, see Transferring Files.

The Motif-based programs are stored in the directory /opt/tn3270/bin/X11, and the character-based programs are stored in the directory /opt/tn3270/bin. Specify the path to the appropriate directory in one of the following ways:
Add the directory to your
Include the directory name each time you run the programs, as in the following examples:
/opt/tn3270/bin/tn3270 -s/usr/jim/newstyle.stu
/opt/tn3270/bin/tnprtsty -s/usr/jim/newstyle.stu
/opt/tn3270/bin/X11/xtn3270 -s/usr/jim/newstyle.stu
The sample command lines shown in this guide assume that you have added
